Way back in the 70′s, NASA was trying to find a way to help make lift offs less stressful on the bodies of their astronaut crews. NASA’s engineers were trying to produce a type of foam padding that would give soft support to the body and would also maintain its shape. The unique properties of this foam allowed for even distribution of weight and the ability to easily adjust to body position changes. Following many years of research and development, TempurPedic brought the very first memory foam beds to the consumer market in the early 90′s.
It is not quite accurate to say that a memory foam bed is soft. Stress on your pressure points is reduced by spreading the weight uniformly on the sleeping surface and molding itself to the contours of the body. The issue with the majority inner spring mattresses is that they tend to create painful pressure points, which memory foam beds are able to alleviate.
Unlike inner spring mattresses, memory foam doesn’t have an issue with things like mold and bacteria build up. This is good news for allergy sufferers who sometimes discover that they have issues with spring beds over time.
Another nice advantage of memory foam beds is that motion transfer is reduced so that your movement won’t disturb your significant other. It is of course a great deal easier to get good sleep if you are not bothered by unwelcome disturbances.
